One card rests on each sephirah. Read from Kether to Malkuth, the spread follows the descent of emanation; read as a whole, it lets every sphere speak to the question.

Reading the shape

The tarot's association with the Tree of Life is old and traceable. Court de Gébelin connected the twenty-two trumps to the twenty-two Hebrew letters in 1781; Lévi carried that into the nineteenth century; the Golden Dawn's Book T fixed the correspondences used here, putting the four aces at Kether and each numbered card in the sephirah of its number.

The ten-card spread itself is later. It lays the Tree out as a field of divination and asks one card of each sphere. Its first publication has not been identified; it belongs to modern practice and circulates without a settled author.

Each position therefore takes its sense from the sephirah beneath it. Kether asks about the crown of the matter; Yesod asks about its foundation; Malkuth asks where it has entered the world. Those meanings come from the spheres, not from an invented list of spread keywords.

Read downward, the positions follow the same descent traced by the Lightning Flash. The spread has a current as well as a shape.

How it is laid

Shuffle, then lay ten cards in the order of the sephiroth: Kether first, Malkuth last, following the descent.

No early source prescribes a procedure for this spread. The cards are shuffled as for the Celtic Cross, then dealt in the order of emanation.

What each place asks

  1. 1. Kether The Crown. Kether is the Crown at the summit of the Tree. In Hermetic Qabalah it represents undifferentiated being and the first point of unity, before experience divides into subject and object.
  2. 2. Chokmah Wisdom. Chokmah is Wisdom, the first outward movement from Kether. It represents dynamic force before Binah gives that force a boundary or stable form.
  3. 3. Binah Understanding. Binah is Understanding, the form-giving power that receives Chokmah's force and gives it limits. It completes the Supernal Triad with Kether and Chokmah and is symbolised as the Great Mother.
  4. 4. Chesed Mercy. Chesed is Mercy, the expansive and generous force on the right pillar. It is the first sephirah below the Abyss and is balanced across the Tree by Geburah's discipline and restraint.
  5. 5. Geburah Severity. Geburah is Severity, the restraining and corrective force on the left pillar. It limits what Chesed would allow to expand without measure, while Tiphareth mediates between them.
  6. 6. Tiphareth Beauty. Tiphareth is Beauty and occupies the centre of the Tree, where it joins more paths than any other sephirah. It represents harmony and the mediating self, reconciling the expansive and restrictive forces of the two outer pillars.
  7. 7. Netzach Victory. Netzach is Victory, the sphere of desire, feeling, creativity and instinctive attraction. On the lower right pillar it supplies the emotional and imaginative energy that Hod organises into language and form.
  8. 8. Hod Splendour. Hod is Splendour, the sphere of intellect, language and deliberate form-making. On the lower left pillar it analyses and organises the feelings and impulses associated with Netzach.
  9. 9. Yesod Foundation. Yesod is Foundation, the imaginal or astral layer through which the forces of the Tree are gathered before reaching physical expression. It stands on the middle pillar between Tiphareth and Malkuth and is associated with images, dreams and patterned processes.
  10. 10. Malkuth The Kingdom. Malkuth is the Kingdom, where the preceding forces of the Tree become the experienced material world. It receives the descent from Yesod and is uniquely shown in four colours to represent the four classical elements.

The position meanings here come from sourced material for the ten sephiroth. The history of the ten-card layout is less certain.

Historical attestation unsourced

The tarot–Tree correspondence is documented, but no first publication has been identified for this ten-card layout.

The tarot–Tree correspondence is well attested, but that does not establish the history of this spread. A search repeated in October 2026 found one published description of this exact layout: Quareia teaches one card on each of the ten spheres, with the outer pillars read as what flows in and away and the middle pillar as the course of the matter. Because the course dates from 2014, it documents the layout but not its origin. Rachel Pollack describes an earlier but different Tree spread in 78 Degrees of Wisdom (1980), crediting Gail Fairfield: all 78 cards are dealt across eleven positions, including Da'ath. That near match does not establish the origin of this ten-card form.
