In this study
Proceedings from a 2024 Harvard conference on Gurdjieff, the Work and their reception. The volume combines scholarship with reflections by practitioners and scholar-practitioners rather than presenting a single academic position.
Carole M. Cusack's chapter (pp. 11–12) describes the academic study of Gurdjieff as a recent field spanning religious studies, Western esotericism, philosophy and psychology. It distinguishes confessional accounts from historical and social-scientific analysis, a useful limit when reading the volume's different kinds of contribution.
